Since leaving school I have always had an interest in building and property. This began at school after a work experience week with a local building firm that sparked my interest.
The thought of being able to build an entire house from nothing fascinated me. Much to my mum’s dismay work experience inspired me to practice at home by removing our own kitchen wall while she was on holiday when she regrettably mentioned in passing she would like the wall removed.
Needless to say, understandably my mother had very mixed emotions regarding my “attempt” but my enthusiasm and commitment were undeniable if nothing else. Clearly, this energy needed channelling and I soon began working with a local firm that specialised in bespoke high-class building projects far beyond that of your standard building company. I progressed from apprentice to fitter far quicker than anyone in the company has before and became the youngest fully qualified fitter they had. I believe this is due to I loved what I did and still look back fondly on my time there. I learnt not just the skills needed to carry out high-quality workmanship, but also the importance of presentation, communication, professionalism and punctuality which I still feel much of the construction trade is lacking.
Fast forward 10 years and I met my current partner and business partner, Rachael. Unconventionality Rachael worked with her father in a small family-operated building company in the beautiful city of york which I soon became a part of. Combining our skills and knowledge we have continued to grow the business to what it has become today… Apex.
The business grew but in our spare time, both myself and Rachael have always had another interest, one that’s still related to property, but vastly different to construction. Property investment. This began innocently enough in the form of watching shows such as homes under the hammer which I am sure we have all done at some stage but quickly grew into countless youtube videos, books, webinars, speaking to other landlords and any other information we could get our hands-on. Pretty quickly we acknowledged this had grown into much more than a passive interest and given that we dont do anything by halves, we quickly decided we wanted to take our interest to the next level and began our property education with professional educators. We amassed a huge wealth of knowledge in areas of property we didn’t even know existed. Discovering all these new avenues and techniques was fascinating. Knowledge is power, but experience is just as important. With this in mind, knowledgeable but inexperienced we appointed a personal mentor with over 25 years of experience in all things property related to oversee and guide us on the final leg of our journey, tying it all together. It is at this stage that we really noticed the gap started to widen and our knowledge increased far faster than we ever could have ever achieved alone which brings us to where we are now.

Rachael
As far back as I can remember I have always been in and amongst builders and building sites. My grandad owned his own building firm and worked with my Dad. I loved going to work with them and getting involved with renovation projects at home so despite not being the norm, it felt only natural for me to continue this when I left school.
I began working with my father full-time doing everything from extensions to roofing which despite not being as actively involved in anymore, I still enjoy if and when the occasion arises.
It was during this period I met my partner Ash. We got along together great and he soon began working with me and my father full time. Our business flourished as we took on more work and secured contracts with local letting agenciesto manage the maintenance of various properties in and around the city of York. In and amongst all of the above we also decided to buy and flip properties. Not including private work for customers as there would be too many to count, we have completed three flips in total, all of which have been completely back to brick refurbishments. Once completed all of our refurbs have broken the ceiling price of the street when we have put them back on the market. I loved not only the satisfaction of a completed renovation but also every aspect leading up to it from the initial viewing, legal processes, planning and architects, building, decorating and finally the staging of the property for viewings. I still look back at these projects fondly and never tire of the process be it for ourselves or our customers.
Property investment was the next phase of our growth that began passively but grew quickly to a small hobby/obsession (for want of a better description!), a strange hobby to have I am sure you will agree. We soon recognised just how much our “hobby” had grown so we decided to pursue it much more seriously which in hindsight was always going to be inevitable. This led to a long period of research, education, books, podcasts, youtube, professional tutoring, courses and appointing a personal mentor with over 25 years of experience in property investment.
Fast forward a few more years and we are exceptionally proud of how much we have grown individually, as a couple and as a business. Our values align perfectly and our passions are the same meaning that our goals are the same.
